Tips to Install an Outboard Motor
Outboard motors are more efficient, versatile, and easier to access for maintenance than inboard engines. That's why novice and seasoned boaters usually prefer to install outboard engines on their boats. If you plan to buy an outboard motor, you will benefit from learning how to install it. Keep reading this guide to get started.
Consult Your Owner’s Manual
Although our guide covers the installation process you can apply on most outboard motors, you want to refer to your model’s owner’s manual for any specific instructions your manufacturer wants you to follow for your model. Be sure to read it thoroughly before you begin setting up your outboard.
Mount the Motor Correctly
First, attach the mounting bracket of your outboard motor to your boat’s transom, then place the motor at the center of the stern. Make sure you tighten the screws and secure the engine with a rope.
You also want to check that you have mounted the model at the correct angle. The motor should neither be too close nor too far from your boat. Otherwise, this can cause your vessel to tilt forward or backward and put your safety at risk.
Position the Fuel Tank
Next, you want to place your outboard motor’s fuel tank on your boat. A well-ventilated area near the motor will be ideal. If that’s not feasible, pick a point away from direct sunlight, which isn't more than 6 feet away from the engine or 3 feet below the fuel connector. Once you have fixed the tank, remember to secure it with ropes or straps and connect the fuel hose to your motor.
Additional Points
Finally, you want to double-check each component to see that it is attached securely and not loosely.
When operating your outboard motor for the first time, you want to start slow and get used to how it handles. You want to practice your maneuvers before going full throttle with your outboard engine-powered boat.
