You need to have the right gear on hand to snag the fish you want to catch. Having a well-stocked tackle box will ensure that you’re always ready for anything and that you aren’t stranded in the middle of your favorite lake without the supplies you need.

Bobbers

Also called “floats,” bobbers are the little plastic red-and-white orbs that float on the surface of the water and dip when a fish is on your line, letting you know when to reel it in. You can also get slip bobbers that will slide up and down your line to allow you to cast more deeply into the water. 

Lures

While you may generally use live bait, you should also keep a good selection of lures on hand. Different types of lures will catch different types of fish, so variety is important. Try to have minnow imitations, spinners, spoons, and top-water lures in your tackle box, and do some experimenting to see which lures work best for you.

Sinkers

These heavy devices attach to your hook to drag it down into the water since the hook and line on their own are often too light to sink. It’s easy to lose sinkers when they come unattached and sink to the bottom of the lake, so bring plenty of extras. You can choose between bismuth, steel, tungsten, or brass sinkers.
