How to Refuel Your Boat
Refueling a boat isn’t that different from putting gasoline into a car’s fuel tank. However, there are a few extra complications that you’ll need to be ready to deal with if you want to avoid damaging your watercraft. If you need a refresher on how to safely refuel your boat, this guide from the experts at Clews & Strawbridge has the details.
Safety Precautions
All it takes is a single tiny spark to set liquid marine fuel and fuel vapors ablaze. That’s why it’s so important that you shut off your electrical equipment before you start refueling. You should also make sure that your vessel’s hose lines, engine fittings, and strainers are all intact to minimize the risk of fuel spills. Be sure to close any doors, windows, and hatches on your boat as well.
Fuel Type
Incompatible fuel will at best simply not work in your boat’s engine, and at worst lead to serious damage. If you’re not sure what kinds of marine fuel are compatible with your vessel, read your owner’s manual.
Tank Size
Getting an accurate reading on how much fuel is left in your boat’s tank can be challenging. This is partially due to the fact that boat fuel tanks are sometimes oddly shaped. The best way to determine how close your fuel tank is to being full is by listening to a distinctive sound. If things are a bit too loud, keep in mind that it’s not strictly necessary that your fuel tank be 100% full before you leave. Estimate as best you can!
Handling Spills
Clean up spilled marine fuel using an absorbent pad. Dish soap will remove the stain, but it will also cause the fuel to sink into the water, creating an environmental hazard.
Before Leaving
Open your doors, windows, and hatches before you leave the refueling dock. This will help dispel any leftover fumes. A boat blower can help with this process, if your vessel is equipped with one. Do one final check of your bilge and engine before you leave. If you still smell fumes, it’s not safe to leave yet.
