Hardware

There are a lot of really great ways to upgrade your boat that don’t cost as much as you think. One of the first things you can do is add some additional rod holders to your gunwales. There’s nothing wrong with holding your rod for hours at a time, but if you add some more rod holders you can put several lines out at once. If you don’t already have a tank aerator in your live bait well, it can be money well-spent to keep your bait alive and to keep your fish from spoiling before you can get it home. And if you don’t have a lot to spend on upgrades, you can always replace old fenders, hooks and nets.

Electronics

A fishing trip is a great way to get away from it all, but don't leave all the gadgets behind! A great sonar system or an electronic fish finder will help you find the best place to drop anchor, and the newer models have more sophisticated technology than ever. You might also enjoy the convenience of having a portable GPS as a backup to your onboard navigation system. A small hand-held unit is always nice to have when you're away from your console, and many models will allow you to send text messages or an SOS signal from areas where you don’t have reliable mobile coverage.

Fishing Gear

You have so many gear choices that you might not know where to start. Adding some downriggers to your gunwales gives you the ability to control the depth of your bait as you move through the water, and it allows you to change up your fishing tactics. A bathiscope is a great low-tech tool that can help you spot the fish below the water. Sonar systems are great, but a bathiscope is a valuable tool in a seasoned fisherman's hands. It gives you eyes under the water, which really comes in handy on sunny days when you’re forced to squint to compensate for the glare off the water's surface.
