If you own a fishing boat, you probably already know a lot about fishing. However, sometimes the occasional refresher can be helpful. There may be things you’ve forgotten or strategies that you haven’t tried yet. That’s why the experts at Clews & Strawbridge have created this fishing guide for fishing boat owners.

Choosing Your Gear

What kind of fishing gear you bring with you depends on your overall fishing style and what you want to catch. Some people spend hundreds of dollars on top-of-the-line rod and reel, along with a selection of lures, nets, and other tools. Other people are perfectly fine with just a cane pole and a container of worms. As long as you have a hook, line, and bait, you should be able to fish. Of course, you’ll need a stronger rod and line to catch bigger fish, but it’s fine to keep things basic while you’re just starting out.

Of course, you’re also free to bring along as many extras as you like. Tools like a net and pliers can make fishing easier. If you’re going to be outside when the sun is at its most intense, (from about 10 AM to 5 PM) apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Don’t forget the bug spray and first aid kit. You should also bring some water to keep yourself hydrated.

Preparing the Bait

Different fish have different preferences in regards to bait. Do your research if there’s a particular kind of fish you want to catch, and don’t be afraid of a little trial and error. Setting the bait so that it survives as long as possible (if you’re using live bait) and the fish will need to bite down on the book in order to get to the bait is also important.

Follow The Law

Follow all local and state regulations regarding fishing, including purchasing a license should you need one. Only fish in approved ponds and streams.

Checking the Weather

There’s nothing more embarrassing than having to cut your fishing trip short due to unexpected bad weather. Luckily, modern forecasting technology is reasonably accurate and can predict storms well ahead of time. You also may need to adapt your plan should circumstances change. For example, if there’s a sudden heat wave, try fishing in the early morning or evening when things are cooler.
